About Dallas
Dallas is the ninth most-populous city in the US and third largest in the state with a population of about 1.3 million. For years prior to official settlement, Dallas was the home of the Caddo People as well as Spanish and French colonists. In 1841, the first permanent settlement was made on the Trinity River and named Dallas by surveyor John Neely Bryan. The origin of the name Dallas is uncertain though many theories have been put forth. After the annexation of Texas into the US in 1945 and the establishment of Dallas County in 1846, the city of Dallas remained unincorporated for a decade before its official incorporation on February 2, 1856. In Dallas County, the average property tax rate is just 2.06%, but for residents of the City of Dallas, rates can range anywhere from 2.25% to 3% and higher, depending on school districts and other special districts, making these homes some of the highest taxed properties in the state and the US.
